Severnside Tritons has a Learn to Swim and Swim Development Programme running in South Gloucestershire catering for nearly 150 swimmers. Children can start learning to swim with us from age four or five and usually stay in our Swim Development Section until about eight. We use buoyancy aids to help young swimmers practise their strokes in the correct position in the water.
The aims of the Severnside Tritons Learn to Swim Programme are:
- to teach children to learn to swim safely
- to teach children to learn to swim in an environment where they enjoy themselves
- to teach children to learn to swim with good technique
- to introduce as many different types of water skills as possible
- to give as many swimmers as possible the necessary skills to enable them to swim beyond our learn to swim programme
- are aware of the environments in which we teach
- we use appropriately qualified teachers
- give positive feedback to the children
- reinforce good technique, especially body position in the water
- introduce a variety of activities – water polo, floating, submerging activities etc
- inform swimmers of the competitive side of Severnside Tritons.
Swimmers who want to take their swimming further can join the competitive side of the Club if the coaches deem that they are suitable. Have a look at the section on "squads and progression" to find out more.
